Appearance

The athletic Toy Fox Terrier shows grace and agility.  the body is muscular and in turn, this small breed dog has great stamina.  When running,  he appears to do so with no effort and is very elegant.   The eyes are clear, bright and dark.  Many say that those eyes give off a look of intelligence, eagerness and interest.

Ears are erect, pointed and set high; they are set close together but are not quite touching.  Females are a bit longer than males.  The neck curves gracefully and blends into the shoulders with a deep chest and muscular ribcage.  The tail is docked, where legal.

Personality

This small breed dog is outstandingly loyal, intelligent and friendly.  Known for learning new tasks quickly, those who want to have a quick study in regards to housebreaking may find the Toy Fox Terrier to be the perfect pet.

Like many other terriers, the Toy Fox is lively, determined and not easily intimidated by larger dogs.  With his owners, he is usually very comical, trying hard to amuse his human family with entertaining actions and expressions.  He generally gets along very well with children, especially those who like to join in his many energetic games.

Origin & History

So many dog breeds were brought to American after being developed elsewhere; not so with the Toy Fox Terrier.  The breed is is result of the crossings of many breeders, some which may surprise you:
  • Miniature Pinschers
  • Italian Greyhounds
  • Chihuahuas
  • Manchester Terriers
Sometimes known as the AmerToy (short for American Toy Fox Terrier), this breed has become not only a wonderful family companion but an excellent show dog as well.  However, its instinct is to hunt.  Some pets today still have that hunting desire and are used to chase down rabbits or squirrel.

Health

The health issues this breed is most prone to are basically the same as most other toy breeds, except for 1 condition known as Congenital Hypothyroidism with Goiter (CHG), and this usually strikes when the pup is very young, from just a few days old to a 3 weeks old; it is fatal.

The other issues one must be aware of, only as a possibility, are:
  • Patella luxation (slipped kneecap)
  • Demodectic Mange (fur loss issue)
  • Legg-Calve Perthes Disease (blood clotting issue)
  • von Willebrand's Disease (another type of a blood clotting issue)
Exercise

This is an active dog who needs to have a good daily walk, at the very least.  He should be walked for at least 30 minutes.  Better yet, is to have a yard in which the dog can run and play while supervised.

Grooming

The short coat makes grooming easy.  Every other week baths will keep the coat shiny.  A brushing once a week will also maintain health of the fur and take care of any dead hairs.  Daily dental care should be done, as it is suggested with all small dogs.  Nails will be in need of a clipping about every 2 to 3 months.  Any long hairs inside of the ears should be plucked.

Care & Training

Because of its hunting instinct, an owner must show that they are in charge.  Command training is a must and one must be diligent in housebreaking so that the Toy Fox Terrier concentrates on the task at hand and does not try to chase after little creatures.

Usually not shy, this dog sometimes needs a bit of help with behavior issues, such as eating feces, finicky eating, getting along in multiple dog households and digging behavior.
