Description

The Lakeland Terrier is a small dog, with a sturdy build.  The male Lakeland Terrier is more squarely build than the female.  The body is seep and narrow, allowing this dog to squeeze into rocky dens and yes there is sufficient length of leg under to cover rough ground easily.  This dog has a rather long neck and a high tail set.  The movement can be described as graceful.

The head is rectangular and the jaws are quite powerful, with large teeth meetings in a scissors or level bite.  The expression on this small breed dog depends on his mood at the time...although typically alert, he may be intense and determined or happy and silly.

The ears are small, V-shaped and fold just above the top of the skull.  This dog has a double coat, the wiry outercoat and soft undercoat.
The double coat is also known as a "two-ply".

The "proper" cut is to have the coat trimmed short on the ears, forechest, shoulders and behind of the tail, but the coat on the body is longer and may be slightly wavy or straight.

Color Information

This small dog comes in a wonderful variety of colors including: solid blue ( a faded diluted black), black, liver, red  (a dark orange) or wheaten ( a light creaming tan).  Markings are often a saddle, darker coloring across the main portion of the back.

Personality

The Lakeland Terrier dog is a lively, spirited, happy and friendly breed with a confident attitude.  Typically, this dog is bold but not overly aggressive or stubborn.  He is very affectionate and loyal to his owners and can be a great companion, most do well with children.

Unlike many other Terriers, he usually enjoys the company of other pets and will not enjoy the "chase".  Although to be safe one should keep an eye on hamsters, guinea pigs and other small creatures to be sure.

This dog does like to dig.  For those with a yard, often offering the Lakeland Terrier their own speical area in which to dig will keep the dog out of the garden and other areas where you do not want holes.

Or
igin & History

This is one of the oldest working terrier breeds still known today, having been bred, raised and worked in the Cumberland lake district of England.  Its name just changed recently, as this dog used to be known as the Patterdale Terrier.  Before packs of hounds were formed, this breed was kept by farmers in the mountain district, who formed a hunt with a couple of hounds and these terriers.  Their work was to hunt the foxes that went after the sheep.

The breed has always had great courage and would follow underground for very long distances.  In 1871 there is a report of a Lakeland Terrier crawling 23 feet under a rock to follow an otter, he was recovered after 3 days and was in good health.

Health

This is a very hardy and health dog and there are no serous hereditary diseases.  As with all smaller dogs, one should be aware of:

  • Collapsed trachea
  • Luxating patella
  • Hip dysplasia
      Exercise

This is a high spirited breed with lot of energy and enthusiasm, therefore he needs plenty of exercise, both with walks on a lead and a free run and play time in a yard.

      Grooming
The coat needs to be hand stripped 2 - 3 times per year. This is a process in which hair is thinned out without actually clipping the length.   Teeth should be brushed every day,  A brushing done every 3 days, baths given every 2-3 weeks and nails trimmed very 6-7 weeks.  A professional dental cleaning should be given 1 time per year.

        Shedding

The is dog has little to no shedding. Any loose hairs that do occur can be taken care of during the times that you brush.

        Care & Training
