Description

The Chinese Crested Dog is a fine-boned, elegant and graceful small breed toy dog.  This breed comes in 2 varieties, although there is only 1 official bred: the Powderpuff (Powder Puff Chinese Crested) which is completely covered with hair and the Hairless, which has the unusual appearance of only having fur on its head, tail and paws.

Both have an alert look about them with their un-cropped ears large and erect and their cheeks tapering cleanly into the muzzles.  The hairless Chinese Crested dog often has missing teeth and this is not usually faulted in conformation events. The slender tail tapers to a curve and is carried slightly forward, over the back when the dog is moving.

Wherever the body is hairless, the skin is very soft and smooth, the head crest beginning at the stop and tapering off between the base of the skull and the back of the neck.  Hair on the ears and face is permitted on the Hairless, although it may be trimmed on either variety. On either dog, fur is a double coat.

The Hairless Chinese Crested has the advantage of virtually no shedding and a very minuscule chance of getting fleas.

Color

The colors on this dog are absolutely amazing.  They include:  Apricot, Black, Black White & Tan, Chocolate, Cream, Palomino (A color originally used to refer to horses, this is a golden color with with fur around the head [mane]), Pink & Chocolate, Pink & Slate, Slate (Pale gray), White, Black & Tan, Black & White , Brown, Pink (Diluted red), Red, Sable, Silver, White & Black, White & Chocolate.   Markings included: Spotted or White markings.

Origin & History

The Chinese Crested dog is believed to have evolved from the African hairless dogs used for barter by merchants and sailors.  In this way, they were brought to many ancient ports throughout the world.  The Chinese, favoring small dogs, selectively bred them to dogs of smaller size.  By the 16th century, the breed was found in ports throughout Central and South America, as well as in Africa an Asia.  Very popular beginning in the 1930's, it was not until 1991 that the AKC official recognized this small breed dog.

Personality

Known for being very loving, this dog is a wonderful companion who is playful and entertaining with an amazing personality.  A wonderful family pet, this is one of the best small breed dogs for homes with children.

Health

As with all smaller canines, luxating patellas is also a concern.  Early tooth loss is common and vigilant dental care should be done. The hairless variety (by far the most popular type) is often sensitive to lanolin and wool; therefore an owner must be aware of canine allergy issues.

Puppy Pimples - it is common for these small breed dogs to have pimples or blackheads, especially when a young puppy.   To help with pimples on the Chinese Crested dog, gently scrub the skin with human facial scrub brush.  After rinsing well, wait about 20 minutes for the skin temperature to return to normal and for the pores to close before applying skin lotion.  The lotion should not contain lanolin and should be oil free.

Exercise

This is not a particularly high energy breed, therefore a sensible walk and some games or romps in the yard 1 time per day is all that is needed. When exercising outdoors in cold weather, the hairless variety should wear a doggie coat or sweater, as this dog is sensitive to cold or damp weather.

Grooming

Hairless Chinese Crested dogs need to be bathed about 1 time per week and it is very important to apply sun screen on the skin to protect again sunburn whenever you are outside for more than 10 to 15 minuets.

Power puff Chinese Crested dogs need a little more time spent on grooming; with a good brushing each day in order to avoid tangles.  The best grooming technique is to brush out the coat in sections.  Before brushing, spritz each section with a combination of 2/3 water to 1/3 dog conditioner.  Once brushing is done, going over the body with a comb will ensure that there are no tangles.

For those with a Hairless, it is very important to not allow the skin to become dry, this can quickly lead to cracking...and then possible infection.  For this reason, a daily or every-2-day application of soothing skin cream should be applied.

Care & Training

Proper dental care and knowledge of allergies (since this breed can have contact allergies) is vital.  Proper socialization training is often necessary to have a emotionally happy crested dog. Knowledge of care specifically for small breed dogs is highly recommended
