Care Many small dogs are very low shedders.  If you do not want to have to vacuum every day and run de-linters on your furniture,  then one of these breeds may be perfect for you.   It is important to keep in mind that even low shedding dogs do shed somewhat.  Some have certain molting phases or what is termed “Blowing the coat”.

If so, this often happens one time per year.  It can also occur right after a heat cycle or after delivering a litter.  In any case, a smaller sized dog equals less furs around the home.  Grooming is easier, as you have less coat to maintain.

Brushing and combing a five pound dog is going to take less time than going over a fifty pound coat.  Many breeds can be kept trimmed down to really reduce maintenance.

This month's topic will discuss the learning pace for puppies and dogs.  At certain ages, your canine family member should be able to comprehend and understand different elements.  More

Children: Choosing a smaller breed has advantages as a larger dog can easily knock toddlers down during playtime.  It is also easier for a child to relate to an animal that is closer to their own size; they do not feel overwhelmed with a large pet in the home.  One element to keep in mind is that many toy breeds are dubbed “under foot” dogs for a reason.  Accidentally stepping on a pup or playing too rough can cause injury.  Proper handling should be taught to everyone in the household.

Allergies: It was not long ago that people assumed that having a pet would increase a person’s risk for allergies.  Recent studies show us that those who grow up with a pet actually built up immunity toward this and in the long run, their exposure allowed them to tolerate a dog.

There are 157 different types of dog breeds, so why a small dog? There are many reasons why this sized dog makes the perfect pet.  They do well and adapt to just about any sized home,  whether an owner lives in a small apartment  high rise or a sprawling farmhouse.  Some can even be litter box trained or pad trained for those who do not have quick and easy access to the outdoors.

Often dubbed "lap dogs" or with the purpose of being "companions",  they seem to be meant just for snuggling and are wonderful companions.

Size: For those who wish to have more than 1 canine family member, having pets who have that smaller stature usually makes for a good multi-dog household. Daily care is often easier, as there is less brushing to do,  there are fewer hairs lying around the house due to shedding and of course, you do not need as much dog food as you would with a Great Dane! The majority of them still maintain that "puppy appearance" and this is very appealing to so many people.  Lastly, they are easy to carry and travel with. Everything is smaller, from the amount of food you will be buying to the size of the toys.

Happiness: Research is conclusive, having a dog increases serotonin and dopamine levels in a person, naturally occurring chemicals that induce feelings of peace and happiness.  Those who own a pet have lower blood pressure and it is even thought to help keep your heart healthy.  Being able to pat, snuggle and enjoy the presence of a dog can keep depression at bay and boost your overall moral.

Whether you already have your perfect pet or you are looking for the best canine family member for you, we hope that you will stay a while and learn about the breeds that you are interested in.

Your decision should not be based solely on appearance.  Other issues such as personality, grooming needs, behavior and health should be considered.  We know that it is very important for you to find that perfect match.  For those who already have their best friend, you will find accurate, helpful advice and information.

Always Remember...
"A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, big or small, young or old. He doesn't care if you're not the most athletic, or not the funniest person at a party. To your dog, you are the greatest, most wonderful,  nicest human being on the planet. You are his friend, his protector, his life"
